It is a condition that alters men's ability to have and sustain an erection. Many people may not realize but it is a common problem that affects nearly half of all men over the age of 40.
An erection is successful only if nothing interrupts the natural process of getting one. The brain sends chemical signals through nerves, making blood collect in the penis and stiffens until ejaculation.
Majority places the blame on old age but E.D. can actually be associated with other health conditions.
Who Suffers From Erectile Dysfunction?
Most patients believe erectile dysfunction affects only older men, however a recent study shows many young men may also have ED. The study, published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, shows one in four men at an outpatient clinic seeking a solution for erectile dysfunction was actually under the age of 40. Also of those men under age 40, 48.8 percent of them had a severe case of the sexual condition, compared with 40 percent of men older than age 40.
As mentioned earlier, E.D. generally affects older men. However, it is still possible for younger men to experience this. There are many factors that can contribute to E.D. such as hormones, nerves, the brain, cardiovascular system and even emotions. Although not a dangerous condition in itself, sexual health experts generally advise men who suffer from E.D. to consult a medical professional.
There are 3 primary signs and symptoms namely:
Trouble achieving an erection
This symptom is linked to common situations such as rise in stress levels or excessive drinking and smoking. It may also be associated with other health problems. An injury to nerves, loss of blood supply to the penis, surgery or side effects of certain medications may also cause trouble achieving an erection.
Difficulty in maintaining an erection
Possible causes of Erectile Dysfunction are both physical and psychological. Physical speaking, it can be due to Erectile Dysfunction, too much or lack of exercise, and excessive use of alcohol and drugs. Psychologically speaking, associated issues can be due to depression, stress, or simply a dispute between you and your lover.
Reduced or lack of sexual desire
The health issues related to having difficulty maintaining an erection are the same as when you're having trouble achieving one in the first place. Although it is fairly common and most, if not all, adult men have experienced this every now and then, you should consult your doctor is this happens more than 25% of the time.
How Is Erectile Dysfunction Treated?
There are various factors that cause erectile dysfunction just as there are different types of medication to treat specific cases. An experienced medical professional is required to assess what type of medication is best for each patient.
